Choosing The Right Adapter
Stillwell offers a wire range of leak-tight fittings and adapters for high pressure hydraulic applications. Our high-quality fittings come in a range of sizes and shapes including JIC fittings, NPT fittings, O-Ring Boss fittings, and more. Pair these adapters with any of our NeXflex Hoses for a simple installation and best fit and finish.
The internal and external diameters of the adapter should be compatible with the hose diameter. Fittings that are too large or too small can cause the connection to fail or lead to leakage. Hydraulic sizes are often measured in 1/16 in increments, with a dash size indicating the inner diameter. For example, a -6 hose has an inner diameter of 6/16 in, or 3/8 in.
JIC: These fittings have a 37-degree flare angle and parallel threads, and are often made from nickel alloys, brass, carbon, or stainless steel. They can withstand higher working pressures and offer better sealing capabilities than NPT fittings, which rely on tapered threads for sealing.
NPT: These fittings have a 60° angle, meaning that each thread makes a 60° angle with the centerline of the pipe or fitting. NPT threads are tapered and have flat peaks and valleys, also known as a Sellers form. The taper is typically 1/16 inch per inch, meaning that for every inch of thread length, the diameter decreases by 1/16 of an inch.
BSP: These fittings have a 30-degree cone seat, rounded threads, and can optionally have tapered threads. They can provide a secure, leak-tight seal, especially when using bonded seals or O-rings.
The material of the adapter should be compatible with the hydraulic fluid and the operating environment. Common materials include brass, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. The material also affects the adapter’s weight, resilience, and fit for the application.
